Coleraine And Ballymoney Could Gain 'Holiday Resort' Status

community Feb 03, 2025

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is considering granting Coleraine and Ballymoney "holiday resort" status under The Shops (Sunday Trading) (Northern Ireland) Order 1997, which would allow large retailers to open on additional Sundays during the tourist season.

Last summer, Councillors agreed, despite opposition from DUP members, to consult the public on declaring Coleraine and Ballymoney ‘holiday resorts’ so that large stores can extend Sunday opening hours.  The request to bring Coleraine and Ballymoney into line with Portrush, Portstewart and Ballycastle was made by supermarket chain, Lidl.

Currently, Portrush, Portstewart, and Ballycastle already hold this designation, enabling large shops—those with over 280 square metres of floor space—to trade on up to 18 Sundays between 1st March and 30th September, excluding Easter Sunday.

Before any decision is made, the council is inviting feedback from businesses, residents, and other stakeholders who may be affected. Those wishing to express their views must submit written representations by 5:00 pm on Friday, 8th March 2024. Responses can be sent to the Licensing Section of the Environmental Services Department at Riada House, Ballymoney, or via email here.

The consultation aims to ensure local voices are heard before any changes are implemented.
