Council Seizes XL Bully Dog Following Court Order

A warrant issued at Coleraine Magistrates' Court led to the seizure of an XL Bully dog last Friday amid concerns over public safety.

During the hearing, the court was told that the dog had been allowed to stray and was allegedly involved in an attack on another dog. It was further claimed that the keeper had set the animal on a person, resulting in an attack.

The court also noted that the dog did not possess an exemption certificate, a legal requirement for restricted breeds under the Dangerous Dogs Order. From 1 January 2025, owning an XL Bully-type dog without an exemption certificate is an offence. Failure to comply will result in the dog being seized by the relevant council, and the owner could face legal action.

A Council spokesperson said ;

"The warrant was executed that same day with the assistance of PSNI. The dog was seized and removed from a property within the Council area.

"The dog is now securely kennelled in premises outside of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough."
