Licences Approved for July’s Championship
Apr 17, 2025
The court has today authorised the necessary occasional licences for The Open Championship 2025, set to take place at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.
The tournament is scheduled for 13–21 July 2025, with play under licence between 11:30 AM and midnight on weekdays, and from 12:30 PM until midnight on Sundays. A reserve day has been earmarked for Monday, 21 July, should the event be unable to conclude by the Sunday finish.
Organisers, The R&A Championships Limited, have also been granted licences for two purpose-built “spectator villages” adjacent to the course. These on-site camping areas will be open to ticket-holding visitors from 2 PM to 11 PM daily throughout 13–20 July. Neither the Police Service of Northern Ireland nor the local council lodged any objections to these applications.
The R&A—golf’s global governing body outside the United States and Mexico—has overseen The Open Championship every year since its inception in 1860, making it the oldest continually contested golf major. Last year’s tournament drew an audience of 668 million television viewers worldwide, ranking it among the planet’s most-watched sporting events. When Royal Portrush last staged The Open in 2019, around 237 000 spectators attended, contributing roughly £100 million to the local economy.
Having reviewed all documentation and noted the lack of opposition, the judge approved the licences without the need for further evidence.
